Biowaste Ordinance Amendment: Curse or Blessing?
The amendment to the Biowaste Ordinance is keeping the waste management industry very busy. The regulations have a significant influence on the technology to be used in order to reduce the input of (micro)plastics and other foreign substances into the environment as part of the soil-related recycling of biowaste. The stricter requirements are intended to keep plastic waste contained in collected and packaged biowaste out of the treatment processes at an early stage. Associations and experts criticize the technical feasibility and fear an increase in organic waste incineration as well as the restriction of the marketability of compost. However, there are solutions to the legislator's demands that do exactly the opposite: Using new concepts for the removal of impurities before composting or fermentation, operators benefit from greater efficiency in plant operation, savings in disposal costs and a quick return on investment.
